MISS VIETNAM CONTEST TO BEGIN IN HOI AN

The Miss Vietnam 2008 beauty pageant will kick off this Thursday in Hoi An Town in the central province of Quang Nam.
Thirty beauties across the country will compete over 10 days for a VND300 million (US$18,000) crown made from gold, silver and gems, pageant organizers said Monday at a press conference in Hanoi.
Miss Vietnam organizer, Tien Phong newspaper, said the finale will be broadcast live from Hoai River Square on August 31.
After being presented to this year’s winner, the crown will be kept at the Vietnam Bank for Investment and Development, to be bestowed on the winners of future Miss Vietnams.
Apart from the crown, the winner of the contest will be awarded VND150 million ($9,041) in cash and a trip overseas.
Second and third place winners will receive VND80 million ($4,822) and VND60 million ($3,616).
After the first event in 1988, the biennial Miss Vietnam pageant has become a major cultural event, awaited by millions of people, said Tien Phong Editor-in-Chief Duong Xuan Nam, head of the pageant organizing board.
The contest really helps popularize the image of the country, Nam said.
